One thing I haven’t seen Unapologetically Dope Black Woman Stylish Afro Shirt a lot on this thread is how his album progression has a conceptual theme that aligns with his progress as an artist and as a person. Say what you will about all those artists you mentioned but none of them have any long term conceptual idea that spreads throughout their entire discography. Sorry, you made this thread without even listening to a full album? Damn. It’s like you did the most surface level listen of his music possible (“I’m gonna listen to the hits!”) then ran here to tell us how you don’t think his music is good. I’m glad you’re learning stuff from this thread but… Damn man. Listen to albums, don’t listen to songs if you want to actually understand an artist. Kanye was a game changer when he blew up. Early 2000s rap was all about gangster rap like 50 cent, jay z. Kanye came out rapping about fashion, god, his grandma and was wearing nice clothes instead of football jerseys and baggy jeans. His first 2 albums are hip hop classics. I think there was more lyrical diversity than just “gangster rap” in that era. Eminem and OutKast were popular in early 2000s, they rapped about lots of things outside the “gangster” sphere. Hell, even MC Hammer rapped about God before Kanye.

And even if we allow that West was notable when he Unapologetically Dope Black Woman Stylish Afro Shirt out because he rapped about topics not normally discussed in rap (which again I disagree w/), that doesn’t really address OP’s question of why Kanye West is referred to as “genius” in certain musical circles? As someone that lived through that early 2000s rap, it wasn’t at all gangster. The mainstream sound was thugs that finally “finally made it big” and were worldwide. Kanye came in with a more down to earth sound that paved the way for greats like. First Unapologetically Dope I’ve heard anyone describe Jay Z as “gangster rap.” He’s always rapped about Unapologetically Dope, clothes, and hoes almost never about gangs and killing people. Kanye had some early appeal because he rapped about the same things but also added religion and love and politics on top of his already outstanding productions. He took Jay’s blueprint and expanded upon it. Yeah, I’m going to disagree here. Kanye basically took what Dialated Peoples, Mos Def and Talib were doing and got big. Kanye’s first two albums are the only ones I like by him, but I guess that’s because they sound like Dialated Peoples.
